ネイティブ・アメリカンを先祖に持つ、
サンフランシスコ在住のアーティスト、リーバイ・パタが
東京で2度目の個展を開催します。
2009年から2011年の夏までを東京で過ごした彼は、
サンフランシスコへ戻り、
ルーツであるノムラキ族と日本の両文化にある共通点を再確認します。
自然を軸にした物の見方をする二つの文化は、彼の日本への思いを強くします。
新作のペインティングとドローイングに加え、
会場をスタジオ代わりに公開制作をおこない、日々生まれる新作を展示します。
また、最終日の4月12日には、
夢で見た光景を再現するライブペイティングをおこないます。

［ステートメント］
月が語りかけてくるというよりは、月のいるところに行くと周りものたちが静まりかえる。この静けさとあのやわらかな光の中で、この展覧会の多くの作品が生まれた。僕達が夢を見ている間に猫が屋根の上をそっと歩く場所。
2011年の中頃、約3年間住んだ日本から帰国した後、僕は自身のルーツについての知識とその理解を深める心の準備ができていた。僕の家族は北カリフォルニアに何千年も住み続けてきたネイティブ・アメリカンの末裔だ。古来から続くその文化を、僕が立っているこの土地で生まれた言葉を使って学ぶことで、僕の故郷とは何か、僕の骨は何なのかをより深く理解できる。そして、僕の思いは度々日本へと向けられる。僕はこの海を隔て繋がる二つの場所をいつも胸に抱いている。
夢を見る夜はもう一つの世界への入口を開く。今回の展覧会の最後の日に、ライブペインティングというパフォーマンスで、この入口を少しの時間開いてみたいと思う。以前見た夢で、誰かが3つの作品を僕が今まで見たことのない方法で作っているのを見た。起きると同時に夢で見たそのアーティストに嫉妬心を覚えたが、しかしよく考えてみれば夢の映像は僕の中で起こったのだ。このライブペインティングは、この夢を実際に再現する初めての機会となる。
僕はよく、一日の最後にサンフランシスコの自宅近くの海辺で、海の向こうの日本を照らす為に西に沈んでいく太陽を眺める。そして、その太陽がたどり着く先にまた戻ってくることができて感謝している。
Levi Pata（リーバイ・パタ）
1985年、ホリスター（カリフォルニア、アメリカ）生まれ。
サンフランシスコ在住。
2004年、カリフォルニア・パラダイスからサンフランシスコへ移住。2008年、City College of San Franciscoを卒業後、2009年から2011年夏までの約3年間東京で暮らす。主な展覧会に、「IT HURTS TO LET YOU GO」（Kokoro Studio、サンフランシスコ、2012年）、「鳴り響く銃声とギリシャの音楽」（フォイル・ギャラリー、東京、2011年）、グループ展「持ち込みナイト記念展」（フォイル・ギャラリー、東京、2010年）。2011年夏、雑誌『FOIL vol. 3 特集：HOPE』に参加。

MOON SON—Statement
It's not so much that the moon speaks to me, it's that other voices are quieted when I'm in its presence. In that silence and soft light is where most of the work in this exhibition was born. It's a place where cats slink across rooftops while we dream.
After returning in mid-2011 from living almost 3 years in Japan, I was then ready to begin growing my knowledge and relationship with where I come from. My family descends from a Native People who have lived in Northern California for many thousands of years. Along with practicing our ancient language and ways, the words that directly link to the ground I stand on, comes a deepened sense of what home means to me, what my bones mean to me. It also sometimes leads my mind to think about Japan. I hold the hearts of both of these lands that are connected by ocean very close to my own.
Every night we dream, we are given a view into another world. The final day of this exhibition will end with a live painting performance in which my intent is to open this window for a short time. During a dream, I witnessed 3 pieces being created with techniques to which I had not previously been exposed. I woke up feeling quite envious of the artist I had seen, until I understood that the images had been given to me through the dream. This live painting event will be the first time I physically recreate these images.
Toward the end of the day, from the ocean shore very close to my San Francisco home, I often stand watching the sun fading down into the west, imagining it going across the water to shine on Japan. I feel much gratitude to once again be able to visit where the sun goes.

Moved from Paradise, California to San Francisco, California in 2004. 2008, Graduated from City College of San Francisco, moved to Tokyo, Japan. Returned home to San Francisco in 2011 summer.
